Ethiopian elephants and lions at risk due to forest cut

A company is clearing an Ethiopian forest which is recognised as a conservation area, and according to experts wild life is now in danger.

A thousand rare black-mane lions — an Ethiopian national symbol — and some 300 elephants are in danger after a swathe of forest in their sanctuary was cut down, a wildlife expert said on Thursday.

The land was cleared from a conservation area at Midiga Tola, adjacent to the Babile Elephant Sanctuary located 560 km (350 miles) east of Addis Ababa, Ethiopian Wildlife Association President Yirmed Demeke said. (more…)

Elephant calf left behind near Orissa Capital

Bhubaneswar: An elephant calf from the Chandaka elephant sanctuary that strayed into the Capital city along with five elderly pachyderms on Thursday night has been left behind.

The elderly group and the calf had got separated on Friday. The group returned to the nearby Chandaka forests on Saturday night apparently after they failed to trace the calf.

The forest department officials have kept the male calf, aged about one year, in a natural enclosure close to the main entry point of Chandaka forest at Godibari. (more…)

Miscreants set fire to grass in Kolleru killing flora, fauna

KOLLERU (West Godavari): On receiving reports that fire spread to hundreds of acres of hydrophyte grasslands in Kelluru lake, members of the Kolleru Lake Development Society visited area to study the facts.

The fire affecting more than 500 acres grasslands was visible from several kilometers and residents of Eluru, Akiveedu, Bhimavaram, Palacole, Narsapuram, Kovvur, Nidadavole and other towns complained that the ashes from the fire fell on trees and houses.

Elephant calf left behind near Orissa Capital

Bhubaneswar: An elephant calf from the Chandaka elephant sanctuary that strayed into the Capital city along with five elderly pachyderms on Thursday night has been left behind.

The elderly group and the calf had got separated on Friday. The group returned to the nearby Chandaka forests on Saturday night apparently after they failed to trace the calf.

The forest department officials have kept the male calf, aged about one year, in a natural enclosure close to the main entry point of Chandaka forest at Godibari.

The forests authorities are now hoping that the elephants might come out of the sanctuary during night time to rescue the calf.

However, the future of the calf hangs in balance as the authorities also had doubts about the return of the herd. In many cases it has been observed that the elephants desert the calf once it comes in touch with humans. (more…)
